But soon he begins experiencing nightmarish visions, from devilishly grinning children’s faces on the It’s a Small World ride to princesses doubling as high-class prostitutes for Asian businessmen. He hides the news from his rigid, domineering wife, Emily (Elena Schuber), and their two young children, Sarah (Katelynn Rodriguez) and Elliott (Jack Dalton), puts on a smile, and takes them to the “Happiest Place on Earth.” Along the way, he encounters a pair of flirty French teenage girls and takes a liking to them, creepily shadowing them around the park. On the final day of a family vacation to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Jim learns he’s been laid off. Plus, so much of it, albeit possibly intentional… was so silly.Directed by Randy Moore, Escape From Tomorrow tells the tale of Jim White (Roy Abramsohn), a middle-aged father of two. I think he was going for more of a 'Jacob's Ladder' type of thriller, but the blend of seemingly irrelevant plot devices makes it difficult to let go and subsume to this world, and its imagery. It is a truly impressive exercise in guerilla filmmaking, and so very punk-rock how he pulled it off, and maybe I'm missing something… But, I don't think he was going for Lynch. So then we throw in the underground Epcot thing for one scene, with the big ball tumbling down, a weird pedofile witch who has a magical medallion, and a member of the Disney-body-disposal-unit with telepathic powers, who's powers are so useful in his current job that he is able to determine which pin to place on kids. I feel as though the idea is that there are consequences to our desires (he retracts the flu from the girl's saliva) and when the wife hallucinates, it's to imply she's in the early stages of the illness, but then why is he hallucinating so long before the spit? The illness is the most consistent aspect, along with the father's sexual obsession which is beaten to death, scene-to-scene. The son's sinister, hateful attitude toward his father is present in two small scenes and otherwise forgotten. The 'firing' at the beginning seems to have no effect on the film. Perhaps just as Lynch films don't reach others, this film didn't reach me. Being a huge David Lynch fan, I see Lynch as using sensory over-load (sight, sound, erratic behavior) to bring us to a dreamlike state, that some people can't get engaged in while others analyze based on their subconscious. It seems to me that this Moore guy had about 4 ideas for plots that he was juggling. This led him to not do his mission properly and it's likely that the french girls were agents that were there as a distraction and probably meant to kill him (with Cat Flu.) reply share

If you buy into everything being absolutely real, one thing I came up with was that Jim's boss did not know how to properly communicate with him a mission he was assigned to do at Disney World, instead firing him. I've read others' theory that it's from the kid's point of view, probably looking at their parents' marriage fall apart during that vacation, with Jim leaving the family and forming a new family afterwards. If you see it from the point of view of Jim, it's how he sees things after being put in that mental state after learning he was fired. If you want a logical explanation for the whole movie, it's probably a subjective reality more than anything else. I'd say that Jim died there but he was able to keep living through his imagination and Disney World became his paradise, especially now that it was mixed with the life he had always wanted.
